The Avenue is an exciting and ambitious project. It involves transforming 98 hectares of heavily polluted industrial land back into a place that can be used and enjoyed by both people and wildlife. That’s an area the size of about 200 football pitches!
The Avenue, formerly the Avenue Coking Works, is located at Wingerworth near Chesterfield and is thought to be one of the most contaminated sites in Western Europe. You can read about all the conservation and clean-up activities happening at The Avenue right here on our website, and find out more about the area’s fascinating past – and inspiring future.
Today, The Avenue is already home to a nature reserve, which boasts many different types of wildlife and plants including kingfishers, newts, snakes, toads and rare wildflowers. A Learning Centre has also been built detailing the history of the site and the team work with the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and local schools who regularly use the facility. The Learning Centre is used for open days when we welcome members of the public to find out more. Look out for these events advertised in the local press, flyers and on this website.
