Lets get wild

As part of the clean-up at The Avenue, we’ve created a brand new nature reserve, complete with Learning Centre, supported by the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and the Land Restoration Trust. As key partners, both trusts have been instrumental in securing the long term development and future use of the nature reserve.

The nature reserve, which was first opened in 2005, is made up of several habitats suitable for a fantastic range of animals, birds and insects.

The reedbed and ditch system we’ve created is the perfect environment for the nationally declining water vole for instance, whilst providing nesting and wintering sites for birds including the reed warbler, kingfisher, water rail and great crested grebe.

Similarly, the new Avenue wetlands we’ve created have become home to birds like the lapwing, snipe, teal and widgeon. Plus, you’ll also find grass snakes, harvest mice, great crested newts, butterflies and dragonflies – to name just a few.

Members of the public are very welcome to visit The Avenue Nature Reserve, and you’ll be able to find out more about the history, and future, of the site at our Learning Centre Open Days. The Avenue Nature Reserve is the perfect place for a walk, cycle ride or horse ride, as well as wildlife spotting.
