But firstly, What is an EMS?

• It is a structured approach to assessing the impact on the environment of all works carried out at the Avenue
• It provides a methodology for developing controls to minimise environmental impacts
• It encourages environmental considerations to be dealt with on a daily basis during operational decision making to implement continual improvements.

And secondly, Why is an EMS a good thing?

• We all have a social, moral and legal responsibility to protect and care for the environment in which we live
• We want to minimise our environmental liabilities
• Through optimisation of operations efficiency we can maximise efficient use of resources and reduce our waste
• There are potential cost savings
• It can help to maintain a good relationship with the environmental regulators
• Demonstrate good management at the site
• Help to maintain good individual and public health.

Our current EMS system is certified under the International Standard ISO 14001 and forms part of the new EMAS standard. The additional features that EMAS requires are:

• Completion of an environmental review, which has already been achieved
• Actively involving employees
• Committing to continually improving environmental performance and legal compliance at the Avenue
• Producing environmental information that will be published in an environmental statement and made publicly available.
