Introduction

The Avenue project aims to regenerate the site of the former Avenue Coking Works following decades of industrial abuse. The project is being promoted by East Midlands Development Agency (emda) who have appointed a team of expects to facilitate its delivery.

As part of emda"s commitment to openness this website has been developed. It is hoped that the content is interesting and informative and that it will enable greater participation by emda"s community partners.

The project is funded through English Partnerships"  National Coalfields Programme, which focuses on returning derelict colliery sites to beneficial use. Additional support has been secured from European structural funds. British Coal"s, the former site operator, polluter pays responsibility will be met by the Department of Trade and Industry (as their successor).

Turner and Townsend and The Environment Partnership have been appointed as a consortium Project Team to deliver the regeneration of the Avenue Site within the criteria set down by emda.
The 98 hectare site clearly presented a challenging remit, and to meet these challenges a highly experienced, diverse and motivated team has been established with skills ranging from chemical analysis, demolition, engineering, environmental legislation and land remediation design. The largely site based team are focused on achieving the project objectives which are:
  • To achieve a positive transformation of The Avenue site within programme, whilst optimizing value.
  • To create a positive perception and reality for The Avenue site within both the local community and the wider technical and business communities.
  • Production of a "best practice" environmentally managed approach to the reclamation of Coking Works and Coalfield sites.
  • Prioritising and promoting awareness of the need to protect the environment during site works.
  • To transform The Avenue site such that it is commercially viable.
The project is programmed to be completed over the next five years and so key aspects of the project will be notified through this website to ensure full awareness and hopefully, a sense of participation by those who regularly visit it.
In April 2006, VSD Avenue, a consortium consisting of Volker Stevin, DEC and Sita Remediation were appointed as preferred contractor for the Avenue Regeneration and we welcome them as a major partner in the Avenue Team.
